Shrewsbury Light Orchestra

Friday 9^th December 2022, Christchurch, Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury.

This was a concert of Christmas music to raise funds for Christian Aid Week, in particular for "Women Farmers in Zimbabwe" where climate change has pushed families to desperate hunger. The concert raised substantial funds and the programme of music was as follows:-

Saturday 3^rd December 2022, The Abbey, Shrewsbury.

The Orchestra was part of the Carol Concert to raise funds for the The Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, Shrewsbury. The other participants were The Royal Harpist, Alis Huws with Carys Gittins (flautist), The Key Change Choir, and Matt Bond(compere and singer). The programme of Music was as follows:-

Sunday 27^th November 2022, All Saints Church, Baschurch, Shropshire.

This programme of music was part of All Saints' Church "CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL". The festival started in the morning and the Orchestra closed the day with the following Christmas music:-

Saturday 15^th October 2022, Saint Mary's Church, Ellesmere, Shropshire.

This concert, named "The Platinum Proms Concert", was organised by the Church and Age UK North Shropshre Supporters Group to raise funds. In addition to the Orchestra there were contributions from Ellesmere College Choral Society, Ellesmere College Chamber Choir, both conducted by Tony Coupe, Rhian-Carys Jones (Soprano), and Kevin Whitley (Organ). The concert included a wide selection of music including the "Last Night" Proms favourites, Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1", "Fantasia on British Sea Songs" by Sir Henry Wood and Hubert Parry's "Jerusalem". The concert raised substantial funds and the programme of music was as follows:-

The Orchestra has played a "Proms in the Garden" concert on eleven previous occasions, the last in 2019. Because the 2020 concert was cancelled and 2021 didn't take place, both because of Covid restrictions, this was the twelth outdoor "Proms in the Garden" that the Orchestra has played at Mytton Cottage. This year, as previously, it raised funds for the The Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, Shrewsbury and Mytton Village Hall. The Orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson (Soprano) for some songs and to lead the community singing. The concert raised substantial funds for the charities and the programme of music was as follows:-

This concert of music was part of the second day of the Church's Christmas Tree Festival. The festival, following on from Saturday, started in the morning and the Orchestra closed the day with a programme of Christmas Music as follows: -

Presented by The West Shrewsbury Hospice Support Group to raise funds for The Severn Hospice, Shrewsbury this was the thirty fourth "Last Night of the Proms" themed concert that the Orchestra has played for this fund raising group. The Orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson (Soprano) and Andrew Murray (Baritone)). The highlight of the concert was the premiere of "The Shropshire Suite" by Matthew Curtis, commissioned by the orchestra in memory of Dianna Whittard, violinist, and long term member of the orchestra, who bequeathed a sum of money to the orchestra when she died in February 2018. The concert raised substantial funds for the Severn Hospice and the programme of music was as follows: -

Presented by The Shrewsbury Breathing Club Support Group this was a concert of "Light Music at Christmas". It was the fifteenth concert that the Orchestra has played for this Charity and it was one of Christmas Music and some carols. There were also some songs by Robin Huber (soprano) and the concert raised a substantial sum for the Charity. The programme of music was as follows: -

North Shropshire Age UK Supporters Group together with St. Mary's Church presented this "Last Night of the Proms" themed concert. Ellesmere College Choral Society, Ellesmere College Chamber Choir and the G and T singers also featured. A substantial sum was raised to be shared by the St. Mary's Church, Ellesmere and Age UK North Shropshire Supporters. This was a "Musical Extravaganza" presented by, and to raise funds for The Shropshire Autism Hub. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others. The aim of the Shropshire Autism Hub is to lead the provision of autism specific services for adults and their carers in Shropshire. The orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson (soprano) and Andrew Murray (baritone) for some songs and Ian Astley (bagpipes) also featured. Included in the programme was a solo from Andrew Farrow (trumpet) accompanied by Georgie Bumpus (piano). The concert raised a substantial sum of money for The Breathing Club. Presented by the local Guide Dogs Association this was a concert for the "Guide Dogs Christmas Celebration". The concert raised over £1000 for The Guide Dog's Association to help train more guide dogs and also for St. Michael's Church. The Orchestra was joined by a choir, drawn from across the county, for some songs and carols and leading the community singing. The programme of music was as follows :-

This concert was a joint one with, and at the invitation of, The Brewood Singers featuring music from stage and screen. A raffle was held during the Interval and all proceeds were donated to Fisher House, "A home away from home" for military patients and their families, on the site of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. On each occaision substantial funds have been raised to support The Severn Hospice, Shrewsbury. and Mytton Village Hall. Presented by The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association "A Christmas Celebration for Guide Dogs" was the second concert the Orchestra has played to raise funds for this organization. The concert was a combination of Christmas Light Music and carols and the Orchestra was joined by two choirs, one being a childrens choir. who lead the community singing of carols and also had some solos with the Orchestra The concert raised a substantial sum of money to help train more Guide Dogs and the programme of music was as follows:

Saturday 28^th June 2014, Mytton Cottage, Mytton, Montford Bridge, Shrewsbury

This was the seventh outdoor "Proms in the Garden" that the Orchestra has played at Mytton Cottage. On each occaision substantial funds have been raised to support The Severn Hospice, Shrewsbury. and Mytton Village Hall. The orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson (soprano) and Andrew Murray (baritone) for some songs and leading the community singing. Despite a wet morning and afternoon, and a shower early evening the concert went ahead, with a slight delay of starting time and the programme of music was as follows :-

Presented by The Shrewsbury Breathing Club Support Group, "A Concert of Light Music at Christmas" was the eleventh concert that the orchestra has played for this charity; it was one of Christmas Music. There were to have been contributions from soloists Paul Wood (percussionist) and Jess Abrahams (soprano) but both were indisposed. The concert raised over £500 for The Breathing Club. The programme of music was as follows :-

Saturday 6^th July 2013, Mytton Cottage, Mytton, Montford Bridge, Shrewsbury

This was the fifth visit of the Orchestra to Mytton Cottage for a "Proms in the Garden" concert. The evening was sunny and warm, in contrast to previous visits when the weather had been somewhat different, and a large sum was raised for the two Charities, Mytton Village Hall and The Severn Hospice. The Orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson (Soprano) and Matthew Tong (Baritone) and the programme of music included the following: -

This was a "Summer Day Out" for the Orchestra, playing to the delighted crowds of holiday makers stopping to listen on The Promenade on Sunday morning and afternoon. The programme of music included the following: -

Presented by The West Shrewsbury Hospice Support Group this was the twenty seventh concert that the Orchestra has played to raise funds for The Severn Hospice, Shrewsbury. As always for this concert it was a "Last Night of the Proms" theme and the Orchestra was joined by singers Iuno Connolly (Soprano) and Andrew Murray (Baritone) and by Buglers from The Band and Buglers of The Rifles. The concert raised substantial funds for the Hospice and the Programme of music was as follows: -

Presented by The Shrewsbury Breathing Club Support Group, "A Concert of Christmas Music" was the tenth time that the Orchestra played for this Charity. It was a concert of mostly Christmas Music and there were also contributions from young players/singers, Tom Wood - oboe and Jess Abrahams - soprano. The concert raised almost £700 for the Breating Club. The Programme of music was as follows: -

Presented by the North Shropshire Support Group of Age UK this was a Christmas concert to raise funds to support the eight Day Care Centres in North Shropshire. The Gs&Ts singing group (six ladies singing A cappella) also performed. The programme of music was as follows :-

"Music in The Grove" was a concert shared with The Fauls Singers and the Much Wenlock Male Voice Choir and raised funds for GREENFIELDS AFRICA. The Orchestra's part of the concert included a selection of light music and the complete programme of music was as follows :-

This "Proms in the Garden" concert was held with a weather eye open because of the ever present dark rain clouds and the concert was interupted by a rain shower just after the interval. The audience was enthusiastic in joining in the community singing and clapping which is always a feature of a "Last Night" concert. The orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson, soprano and Andrew Murray, baritone, for some songs and leading the community singing and also by Mike Shanahan and Graham Hislop, pipers. All proceeds were for The Severn Hospice and Fitz Village Hall and the programme of music was as follows : -

This "Proms in the Park" concert was part of The UK Motorhome and Caravan Summer Fair, held on an outdoor Summer Stage on an overcast but pleasant Summer evening. Although the concert was part of the Summer Fair, it was also open to the general public and they were present in force to join in the community singing and clapping which is always a feature of a "Last Night" concert. The orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson, soprano and Andrew Murray, baritone, for some songs and leading the community singing and also by Mike shanahan and Graham Hislop, pipers. As always for this concert it was a "Last Night of the Proms" theme and the Orchestra was joined by singers Jessica Johnson (Soprano) and Andrew Murray (Baritone) and by Pipers Mike Shanahan and Graham Hislop. This was the Golf Club's celebration of Christmas and included a selection of music played by the Orchestra. The Programme of music was as follows: -

Friday 16^th December 2011, Holy Trinity Church, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury

Presented by The Shrewsbury Breathing Club Support Group, "Light Music at Christmas" was the ninth occasion that the Orchestra played for this Charity. It was a concert of Christmas and other light music and some carols with audience participation and there were also contributions from young players/singers, Bethan Robinson - violin and Jess Abrahams - soprano. The concert raised £700 for the Breating Club. The Programme of music was as follows: -

Saturday 24^th September, 2011, Church of the Holy Spirit, Harlescott, Shrewsbury

This was a "Last Night of the Proms" themed concert that included a wide variety of Light Music, some songs from Jessica Johnson(soprano) and concluded with the "Last Night" favourites. The concert raised funds for the Church. The Programme of music was as follows :-

Saturday, 2^nd July, 2011, The West Midland Show Ground, Shrewsbury

This "Proms in the Park" concert was part of The UK Motorhome and Caravan Summer Fair, held on an outdoor Summer Stage on a very pleasant Summer evening. Although the concert was part of the Summer Fair, it was also open to the general public and they were present in force to join in the community singing and clapping which is always a feature of a "Last Night" concert. The orchestra was joined by Jessica Johnson, soprano, for some songs and leading the community singing. The programme of music was as follows and the last item was accompanied by a Firework Display: -

Saturday, 18^th June, 2011, Mytton Cottage, Mytton, Nr. Shrewsbury

The "Proms in the Garden" concert was played at the Garden Party organised by Tom and Julie Kaye on a pleasantly sunny and warm June evening. Donations were invited from quests to raise funds for The Severn Hospice and Fitz Village Hall and the programme of music was as follows: -

Saturday, 19^th March, 2011, The Leisure Centre, Whitchurch

This concert was organised in order to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. by the Whitchurch Branch of the Charity. The Orchestra was joined by two choirs, The Fauls Singers and The Kelsborrow Choir.

Saturday, 5^th March, 2011, Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury

Presented by The West Shrewsbury Hospice Support Group this was the
TWENTY FIFTH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
that the Orchestra has played to raise funds for The Severn Hospice, Shrewsbury. As always for this concert it was a "Last Night of the Proms" theme and the Orchestra was joined by singers Susan Gough (Soprano) and Andrew Murray (Baritone). The concert raised substantial funds for the Hospice and the Programme of music was as follows:-
 

Saturday, 11^th December, 2010, Condover Church, Condover, Shrewsbury

This concert was one of Christmas music and some carols and raised funds for the Church. It included the Second "premier" in Britain of a new carol, composed and orchestrated by the brother of a member of the SLO, which was also premiered in New York the same day. The following music was played: -

Friday, 10^th December, 2010, Holy Trinity Church, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury

This concert, the eigth featuring the SLO, was presented by The Shrewsbury Breathing Club Support Group to raise funds for that Club. It was a concert of Christmas music, with some carols, and two young people performed as well, Jess Abrahams sang and ProtiK Moulik played piano. One piece, a carol, "Christmas Comes but Once a Year" was the premier performance in Britain and it was also premiered in New York, USA on the same evening.

A total of £540 was raised.

The Breathing Club was started in 1981 to provide help for people with chronic disabling respiratory disease, and their carers. It offers social support, education and companionship on a regular basis and it has been seen that the club improves the quality of life of its members both psychologically and physically. The club is self-funded and relies on the generosity of its members and the general public, without which it could not continue to give vital help and support to members.

This was the third visit by the Orchestra to the Golf Club and a "Last Night of the Proms" programme was requested. There were songs from Jessica Johnson (soprano) and she also led the audience participation singing.
The concert raised funds for the Golf Club and for the Captains' choice of Charities. The Bernard Lingen Trust (for the Ladies' Captain) and Cancer Research UK (for the Gentlemen's Captain). The doors were opened well before the concert for indoor picnics to be set up around tables. The programme of music was as follows: -

This was a first visit to Baschurch by the orchestra and a "Last Night of the Proms" themed comcert was requested. The concert raised funds for the church and the programme of music was as follows: -
